JF-17 Thunder: Cornerstone of Pakistan’s Defense Export Ambitions

**Islamabad:** Pakistan’s efforts to diversify its economy beyond textiles and agriculture are increasingly focusing on defense exports, with the JF-17 Thunder playing a central role.

Developed jointly with China at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, the JF-17 Thunder is priced between $30 million and $40 million, significantly lower than Western fighter jets like the Dassault Rafale.

Following the 2024 IDEAS exhibition, Pakistan announced memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with potential deals totaling around $30 billion, including a $4.6 billion agreement with Azerbaijan. Exports to Nigeria and Myanmar have already been completed, while negotiations with other countries are ongoing.

Experts note that China provides key components for the JF-17 and its export approvals are also dependent on Chinese consent. Supporters claim the jet has proven combat capabilities following skirmishes with India, though these claims remain debated.

Analysts say that if Pakistan succeeds in generating revenue through JF-17 exports, it could reduce reliance on the International Monetary Fund. However, the program’s success will depend on ramping up production and converting MoUs into concrete agreements.
