Punjab Toughens Traffic Laws: Fines up to Rs20,000 for Over-Speeding, Rs15,000 for Using Mobile While Driving

Lahore: The **Punjab Cabinet** has approved major amendments to the **Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1965**, introducing **heavier fines and stricter penalties** for traffic violations across the province.

Under the new amendments, **over-speeding** will now result in fines of **Rs2,000 for motorcyclists**, **Rs5,000 for cars up to 2,000cc**, and up to **Rs20,000 for vehicles exceeding 2,000cc**.

Drivers caught **using mobile phones** while driving will face penalties ranging from **Rs2,000 to Rs15,000**, while **signal violations** and **crossing zebra lines** could incur fines of up to **Rs15,000 and Rs10,000**, respectively.

The revised ordinance also includes provisions for **filing cases against vehicle owners** who allow **underage drivers** to operate their vehicles. Additionally, **seat belts** have been made **mandatory for front-seat passengers**.

The amendments propose the introduction of a **digital challan system**, **computerized driving licenses**, and a **point-based penalty system**, under which a driver’s license will be **suspended for six months to one year** if **20 points** are deducted due to repeated violations.
