Health Tips for Fasting in Hot Weather During Ramadan: Experts Advise Staying Hydrated

Aligarh – The holy month of Ramadan is not only a time for spiritual reflection but also a test of patience and physical endurance. Long hours of fasting in hot weather can increase the risk of dehydration, especially for those working outdoors.
According to Dr. Syed Zia-ur-Rehman, Head of the Pharmacology Department at Aligarh Medical College, fasting is obligatory for every Muslim and observed with devotion across all age groups. However, ignoring physical health in the heat can be harmful.
Dr. Zia-ur-Rehman advised that **suhoor should never be skipped**, as it is both a sunnah and essential for maintaining energy throughout the day. He recommends consuming light but nutritious foods and drinking sufficient water. Dates, fresh fruits, and fruit juices help boost energy and sustain body functions during the long fasting hours.
At iftar, rehydrating the body is crucial after heat exposure and fatigue. Drinks like sharbat, fresh juices, or seasonal fruits are highly effective. For those unable to access expensive beverages, fruit chaat made from watermelon, melon, or papaya offers an affordable and hydrating alternative.
Dr. Zia-ur-Rehman emphasized that people performing strenuous work in hot conditions should take extra precautions, drink plenty of water, and avoid prolonged sun exposure to maintain both the spiritual and physical benefits of fasting.
He concluded that Ramadan is not only a time for spiritual purification but also a test of physical endurance, making proper nutrition and hydration essential for every fasting individual.
