Trump Praises Pakistan’s Military Chief and PM Shehbaz at Inaugural Gaza Board of Peace Meeting

WASHINGTON: The first formal meeting of the Gaza “Board of Peace,” established by US President Donald Trump, commenced in Washington with diplomatic delegations from around the world in attendance.

According to international media reports, global representatives gathered in the US capital for what was described as a historic session aimed at overseeing post-ceasefire governance and reconstruction efforts in Gaza. President Trump posed for photographs with visiting delegations before delivering his opening remarks.

In his speech, Trump praised Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir, calling him “a great man, an outstanding military leader, and a tough fighter.” He said Munir had appreciated his efforts to stop the war and save millions of lives.

The US president also thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, saying, “I like him very much,” and added that Sharif had consistently acknowledged his role in ceasefire efforts.

Trump claimed credit for halting the Pakistan-India conflict, stating that he warned of imposing heavy tariffs. He further alleged that 11 aircraft were shot down during the hostilities. The president also asserted that his administration had helped stop eight wars globally, some of which had lasted for decades, and expressed optimism about ending a ninth conflict soon.

Speaking about Gaza, Trump criticized Hamas and described the situation there as highly complex. He voiced hope that Hamas would lay down its arms under an agreement and suggested that Iran could reach a deal within 10 days.

Trump said the Board of Peace was formed to work toward a brighter future for Gaza, emphasizing that many “friendly nations” had joined the initiative. He specifically mentioned Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan among participating countries.

US Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to address the gathering following Trump’s remarks, along with more than a dozen senior US officials and representatives associated with the Board of Peace.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is attending the meeting as a special guest. Leaders from over a dozen countries are also expected to deliver brief speeches outlining their proposals on Gaza’s reconstruction, security, humanitarian aid, and long-term stability.

According to US officials, the Board of Peace aims to establish an international administrative framework to ensure peace, reconstruction, and humanitarian support in Gaza after the war. However, the initiative has drawn mixed reactions globally, with some critics describing the plan as controversial.
