Persistent Cough After Flu: When It Becomes Dangerous

**Islamabad (Qudrat):** It is common for a cough to linger for several weeks after recovering from the flu or severe cold, but experts warn that certain signs may indicate a more serious problem.

Medical specialists explain that post-flu coughing often occurs because the respiratory tract remains sensitive and not fully healed. Mucus from the nose or sinuses may drip down the throat, causing irritation and triggering a prolonged cough. Conditions like asthma, allergies, or acid reflux can also heighten airway sensitivity, extending the duration of the cough.

Experts note that smoking and exposure to polluted environments worsen inflammation in the airways, increasing both the severity and duration of post-illness coughing.

Health professionals advise seeing a doctor immediately if the cough is accompanied by difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss, or severe night sweats. In particular, a cough lasting more than eight weeks should not be ignored, as it may signal serious conditions such as lung infections or other respiratory diseases.

During recovery, individuals should take precautions around vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, through hand hygiene and proper ventilation. Maintaining hydration with filtered water, a nutritious diet, and adequate rest can also help reduce the long-term effects of post-flu coughing.
