PM Shehbaz Sharif Warns Against Use of Water as Weapon, Calls It Grave Violation of International Law

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has stated that any attempt to use water as a weapon constitutes a serious violation of international laws.

The prime minister said that Pakistan is a signatory to the 1971 international convention on water reservoirs and considers reliable water resources vital for the country’s survival. He emphasized that water reservoirs play a crucial role in tackling the adverse effects of droughts, floods, and climate change.

Shehbaz Sharif noted that water reservoirs are an essential part of daily life and livelihoods for millions of Pakistanis, adding that their protection ensures social welfare at both individual and collective levels.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s stance, the prime minister said the country firmly believes in the fair and complete implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty. He reiterated that any effort to use water as a tool of conflict would be a grave breach of international law.

The prime minister expressed Pakistan’s commitment to protecting water resources as national, environmental, social, and cultural assets and said the country would take all possible measures to safeguard them.

He further added that Pakistan will continue to raise its voice at the global level for the fair, lawful, and peaceful use of water resources.
