Pakistani Newspaper Vendor Awarded France’s Prestigious Grand Order of Merit

Paris: Ali Akbar, a 74-year-old Pakistani newspaper vendor from Rawalpindi, has been honored with one of France’s highest civilian awards, the Grand Order of Merit, by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Ali Akbar has been selling newspapers for the past fifty years in the historic Latin Quarter of Paris, where he has become a beloved figure among locals. The award ceremony took place at the Élysée Palace, recognizing his long-standing contributions to French society. The honor is traditionally bestowed upon individuals who have provided exceptional services at a civilian or military level.

Originally from Rawalpindi, Ali Akbar moved to France in 1973. Upon arriving, he began selling newspapers, initially catering to students at the Sorbonne University and nearby educational institutions. Over the past five decades, he has maintained the tradition of newspaper vending in Paris, gaining recognition not only from locals but also from international media.

This prestigious accolade from the French President has been hailed as a source of pride for the Pakistani community as well.
