Punjab Government Bans 132 Punjabi Songs During Basant Festival Over “Obscene” Content

Lahore: The Punjab government has imposed a ban on 132 Punjabi songs in theater and stage performances, citing the content as immoral, obscene, or suggestive. The ban applies to all types of stage shows, whether private or commercial.
According to an official notification issued by the Information and Culture Department, the lyrics, verses, and tunes of the banned songs are provocative and violate the standard operating procedures set for theater performances. The decision follows the Theater Performance Policy announced on August 13, 2025.
The notification states that the ban will remain in effect until further notice, and no exemptions will be allowed. Directors and deputy directors of all divisional and district arts councils across Punjab, as well as private theater owners and producers, have been instructed to fully enforce the list of prohibited songs. Authorities have warned that even minor violations will not be tolerated and strict action may be taken against non-compliant theater management.
Sources say the move aims to restore decorum and quality entertainment on theater stages. However, the decision may have significant implications for the theater industry, as several performances and productions could be affected. Reactions from artists and producers are mixed, with some viewing the ban as a cultural cleanup, while others see it as a restriction on freedom of expression.
Separately, the police have announced that the Sound Act will be strictly enforced during Basant festivities. Individuals playing or listening to loud music may face arrest to ensure public peace and safety. Police officials said the measure aims to prevent noise disturbances and potential accidents during the celebrations and urged the public to comply with the law and maintain a family-friendly environment.
