Despite Millions in Lobbying, India Faces Diplomatic Setbacks in the U.S.

Islamabad: India’s diplomatic efforts in the United States have faced challenges despite spending millions of dollars on lobbying, highlighting that financial influence cannot easily erase international diplomatic weaknesses.

Investigative agencies OpenSecrets and The Indian Express have revealed India’s extensive lobbying efforts in the U.S. According to OpenSecrets, India hired multiple lobbyists in 2025 in an attempt to repair its damaged international reputation.

The Indian government reportedly paid $450,000 to U.S. lobbying firm BGR Group to restore its diplomatic image. The Indian Express also uncovered India’s lobbying efforts in the U.S., noting that these were initiated following setbacks in regional conflicts, particularly after Operation Sindhur.

The reports state that India sought to use lobbying to engage the Trump administration, promoting a narrative aligned with its interests and attempting to counter unfavorable perceptions arising from the operation.

Additionally, the Indian delegation leveraged lobbying firms SHW Group, receiving $1.8 million annually, and Mercury Public Affairs, hired at $75,000 per quarter, to facilitate meetings with U.S. officials and strengthen diplomatic outreach.

These disclosures underscore that even significant financial lobbying cannot fully compensate for diplomatic vulnerabilities or reverse setbacks on the international stage.
