Shiref Afzal Marwat Criticizes “Stubborn Mindset” for PTI’s Current Situation, Calls for Broader Dialogue

Islamabad: PTI National Assembly member Shiref Afzal Marwat has said that the party’s current struggles are the result of a “stubborn mindset” and stressed that former Chairman Imran Khan has never refused negotiations. He emphasized that dialogue should focus not only on the release of political prisoners but also on the reform of the country’s fundamental systems.
Speaking at the National Dialogue Conference on political reconciliation, hosted by the National Dialogue Committee in Islamabad, Marwat remarked that Pakistan has often failed to understand the concept of national security. Drawing historical parallels, he noted the compromises during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and referenced Nelson Mandela’s long imprisonment, highlighting the enduring results of genuine dialogue.
Marwat further stated that the military should serve as Pakistan’s strength, not the other way around. He criticized the 27th Amendment for undermining judicial independence and questioned who would ensure the implementation of any dialogue agreements.
He also pointed out that his constituency has been severely affected by terrorism and stressed that dialogue should address systemic issues rather than focusing solely on the release of Imran Khan and other prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Marwat concluded by urging PTI leaders to overcome internal divisions, stating, “I was elected from PTI, and it is this ‘I won’t agree’ mindset that has brought the party to this state. Why refuse to sit with ANP, PPP, or even Fawad Chaudhry?”
