Possible Delay in Islamabad Local Government Elections as Government Decides to Amend Law via Ordinance

Islamabad: The local government elections in the federal capital are likely to be delayed once again, as the government has decided to amend the Islamabad Local Government law through an ordinance.
According to sources, the decision was discussed during a meeting of the federal cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The cabinet approved and ratified the decisions taken by the Cabinet Committee for Legislative Cases (CCLC) on December 3 and December 30.
Sources revealed that the issue of local government elections in Islamabad was reviewed during the meeting, where the possibility of further delay was considered. The government has decided to introduce an ordinance to amend the Islamabad Local Government Act.
Under the proposed amendment, the number of wards in Islamabad will be increased through the ordinance, which is expected to impact the election schedule.
In addition, the cabinet meeting reviewed the country’s overall economic and political situation, alongside formally endorsing the decisions of the sub-committee on legislation.
