ECC Approves 5G Spectrum Auction Under Digital Pakistan Program

Islamabad: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved the auction of 5G spectrum as part of the Digital Pakistan Program, officials announced on Tuesday.
Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, alongside IT Minister Shiza Fatima Khawaja, held a joint press conference to share details of the decision. He said the ECC’s approval is a significant step to advance the Digital Pakistan initiative, with the government accelerating efforts to promote digitalization across the country.
The finance minister emphasized the critical role of spectrum in financial and digital inclusion, noting that delays in auctioning available spectrum result in economic loss for the country. He explained that the ECC meeting reviewed and approved the auction process, which was designed to align with national priorities and international standards.
Aurangzeb added that the Spectrum Advisory Committee had engaged the consultancy services of National Economic Research Associates (NERA). NERA, under the supervision of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and other relevant authorities, coordinated with stakeholders and conducted a detailed review of past national, regional, and international spectrum auctions.
“All international benchmarks were considered in the design of the auction, including pricing, payment terms, and the overall auction framework,” he said. “The recommendations were carefully reviewed from Pakistan’s perspective before being formally approved by the ECC today.”
The 5G spectrum auction is expected to enhance digital connectivity, boost telecommunications infrastructure, and contribute to economic growth under the Digital Pakistan Program.
