PIA Flight Operations Severely Disrupted Due to Aircraft Unavailability, Technical Issues Revealed

Islamabad: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is facing major disruptions in its flight operations as several aircraft are currently unavailable due to technical faults and maintenance delays. Flight PK-225 remains grounded under routine daily checks.
A plane registered AP-BMX, operating PK-308 from Karachi to Islamabad, was taken out of service after a defect was detected in engine number 1’s exhaust cone sleeve. This led to the cancellation of flights PK-308/309 and PK-451/452. Additionally, PK-369 from Islamabad to Karachi was canceled on Thursday evening, and Islamabad–Skardu round trips PK-451/452 were also called off.
Significant delays are also being reported on multiple international and domestic flights, including PK-287 (Islamabad to Doha), PK-286 (Doha to Peshawar), and PK-217 and PK-262 (Peshawar–Abu Dhabi–Islamabad). The Dubai–Sialkot flight is grounded in Dubai due to a brake system malfunction.
Experts say these delays and cancellations are not merely the result of poor fleet planning or management strategies but are also due to a severe shortage of skilled manpower and essential spare parts. Without trained engineers and required components, timely and safe aircraft maintenance is not possible.
The Society of Aircraft Engineers of Pakistan (SEAP) emphasized that it will not participate in any maintenance activity that compromises aircraft safety or airworthiness. Engineers prioritize safety and flight evaluation standards, even if this leads to operational delays.
Authorities are urged to ensure the immediate availability of skilled technical staff, establish a reliable supply chain for spare parts, and adopt realistic fleet management and scheduling plans. Failure to do so could further damage the airline’s reputation and passenger confidence.
