Opposition Alliance Demands Appointment of New Chief Election Commissioner, Calls for Fresh Elections

The opposition alliance *Tehreek Tahaffuz Aain Pakistan* has demanded the appointment of a new Chief Election Commissioner, calling it essential for restoring public trust in the democratic process.
A joint declaration was issued at the conclusion of the alliance’s National Consultative Conference, in which opposition parties demanded a thorough investigation into alleged rigging in the 2024 general elections. The declaration also called for the holding of new, free, and transparent elections, stating that democracy stands on the foundation of credible electoral processes.
The opposition alliance reiterated that it is ready for dialogue and negotiations, emphasizing that political stability can only be achieved through transparency and respect for constitutional principles.
The joint communiqué further demanded the removal of restrictions on meetings with the PTI founder and his wife, and called for the repeal of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), terming it a “black law.” The alliance also urged the government to take immediate steps to curb rising inflation and reduce the tax burden on the public.
The opposition demanded that the government implement the consensus roadmap agreed upon during the peace jirga in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It also called for granting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa its rightful share under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award and stressed that the province’s people must be taken into confidence regarding matters related to mineral resources.
Additionally, the opposition alliance demanded the lifting of the ban on student unions and announced that consultative conferences would be organized at provincial headquarters to mobilize public support and strengthen the movement.
