KP Introduces ‘Personalized Registration Mark System’: Vehicle Number Will Now Belong to the Owner, Not the Car

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has introduced a major reform in its vehicle registration system, allowing citizens to retain their vehicle registration numbers as personal property—regardless of whether they sell their car.
Chief Minister KP, Sohaib Afridi, officially launched the new **‘Personalized Registration Mark System’**, under which vehicle numbers will be linked to the owner rather than the vehicle. This means the registration number will no longer transfer to the new buyer when a car is sold. Instead, the original owner will keep the number and may use it on a new vehicle.
According to the Excise and Taxation Department, under the new digital system, citizens can reserve their preferred registration number for up to three years without associating it with any vehicle. Officials say the system will help eliminate fake and cloned number plates, improve transparency, and ensure faster, corruption-free registration processes.
Chief Minister Afridi stated that the initiative aims to provide maximum convenience to the public, adding that an online registration and transfer system will soon be introduced to further streamline services.
### **How the New System Works**
* The registration number becomes the property of the vehicle owner, similar to a national ID or mobile number.
* Upon selling a vehicle, the registration number will stay with the seller without any additional fee.
* The buyer will have to obtain a new registration number for their vehicle.
* Owners can reuse their reserved number on a new vehicle or keep it inactive for up to three years.
* The system will prevent the misuse of vehicles with fake or illegal number plates.
Authorities say that the new system marks a significant step toward modernization, security enhancement, and improved public service delivery in the province.
