Ranveer Singh’s Pakistan-Focused Film *Dharendra* Sparks Sharp Reactions Across India and Pakistan

Ranveer Singh’s latest Bollywood release *Dharendra*, which features strong anti-Pakistan themes, has triggered intense debate among audiences in both countries. While some viewers praised the film’s production and performances, many others—especially in Pakistan—criticized it as exaggerated political propaganda.
Pakistani viewers on social media labelled *Dharendra* “overblown propaganda,” questioning why their own entertainment industry hesitates to portray narratives rooted in local realities.
Indian journalist and senior editor Arfa Khanum Sherwani also condemned the film, calling it a disturbing blend of majoritarianism, anti-Muslim sentiment and misogyny. She questioned how a movie containing “extreme violence and bloodshed” was cleared by the censorship board.
Amid criticism, some viewers highlighted a positive aspect: *Dharendra* showcased Baloch culture in a way rarely seen on mainstream screens. They praised the portrayal of traditional dance, music and cultural identity—though they maintained that the political framing remained controversial.
The film also faced backlash for using images of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto without adequate context, prompting an official protest from a government spokesperson in Pakistan.
Despite the controversy, *Dharendra* is performing strongly at the box office. Early numbers suggest the film is competing among the top releases of the season, with solid commercial momentum.
