Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon Stresses Media Freedom as Key to a Successful Democracy

KARACHI: Sindh Provincial Minister **Sharjeel Inam Memon** has emphasized that a thriving democracy requires free media, noting the challenges faced by print journalism worldwide amid the rise of digital platforms and social media.
Speaking to the press, Memon observed that people now start their day with mobile phones rather than newspapers, while social media delivers news 24/7. He added that electronic media has also posed tough competition for traditional newspapers. Despite these challenges, Memon said the government aims to support the growth and strengthening of the print media sector, citing concerns over misinformation on social media and the race for breaking news on television.
Memon highlighted the **Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP)** long-standing commitment to promoting media freedom. “PPP has always supported the growth of media. A good democracy succeeds with media freedom,” he said, recalling that during difficult periods, the party itself faced severe media trials but never engaged in retaliatory politics. He noted that in past eras, various TV anchors were taken off air, yet PPP maintained its stance of non-retribution.
Regarding PTI founder, Memon criticized the spread of false narratives against the country, claiming that attempts were made to propagate misleading stories. He also mentioned that the PTI founder advocated for a lifetime extension for General Bajwa, spreading narratives that fueled division.
Commenting on the recent DG ISPR press conference, Memon stated that it was appropriate, adding that trolling and misinformation on social media often originate from abroad. He concluded that attempts to harm the country through such narratives are “doomed to fail” and will not succeed.
