Federal Law Minister: Imran Khan Cannot Hold Political Discussions in Jail

Islamabad: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan cannot engage in political discussions while in jail, as prison rules clearly prohibit publicizing the content of any inmate meetings.
Speaking alongside Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar at a press conference, Azam Nazeer Tarar emphasized that under Rule 265 of the prison manual, inmates are allowed one supervised meeting per week with up to six visitors, and these meetings cannot involve political conversations. He added that under Rule 557, the prison superintendent has the authority to halt any meeting if there is a threat to security or public order.
Azam Nazeer Tarar also highlighted that Imran Khan, as a convicted prisoner, receives special facilities but cannot use jail visits for political purposes. He referenced past cases, noting that even former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family had restricted access under similar rules.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar criticized PTI for allegedly using international media to spread propaganda about Imran Khan’s treatment in jail. He stated that the jail provides the convicted leader with all possible facilities, including visits by his three sisters, but warned that any violations of jail rules, including political messaging, would lead to restrictions on meetings and strict action to maintain law and order outside the prison.
The ministers emphasized that the purpose of inmate meetings is limited to legal discussions and welfare inquiries, not political mobilization or undermining the state. They asserted that the government will ensure strict adherence to rules to prevent misuse of privileges.
