Punjab Fines 50,000 Vehicles for Single Traffic Violation Amid Crackdown on Pollution

LAHORE: Over **50,000 vehicles in Punjab** have been fined for violating traffic laws, primarily targeting vehicles emitting excessive smoke, officials said.

According to DIG Traffic Punjab Muhammad Waqas Nazir, a strict campaign was launched this month against smoke-emitting vehicles, resulting in more than **48,400 challans issued** under emission rules. Ten vehicles had their fitness certificates suspended, while route permits of more than 16 repeat offenders were canceled.

Authorities revealed that fines collected so far exceed **Rs. 97 million**, marking an **85% increase** compared to the same period last year. Additionally, seven FIRs were filed for serious environmental and traffic law violations. Over **7,700 vehicles were inspected** during the campaign, including **2,100 trucks carrying sand and soil**, which were penalized for contributing to pollution.

Under the revised Motor Vehicle Act, the Punjab government has imposed heavy fines for **eight major traffic violations** to enforce strict compliance and ensure road discipline:

* Smoke-emitting vehicles: Rs. 5,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 10,000 for cars/jeeps, Rs. 15,000 for public service vehicles, and Rs. 20,000 for heavy transport vehicles.
* Parking in no-parking zones: Rs. 2,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 10,000 for cars/jeeps, Rs. 15,000 for public service vehicles, and Rs. 20,000 for heavy vehicles.
* Littering from vehicles: Rs. 5,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 10,000 for cars/jeeps, Rs. 15,000 for public service vehicles, and Rs. 20,000 for heavy transport vehicles.

Authorities warned that any vehicle found violating emission or other traffic regulations would face fines and possible further legal action, emphasizing the government’s commitment to environmental protection and road safety.
