Uproar on Social Media Over Massive Difference Between 199 and 201 Electricity Units; Punjab Education Minister Endorses Public Concerns

Lahore: A significant difference in electricity bills between 199 and 201 units has sparked widespread uproar on social media. Punjab’s Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, has also endorsed the public’s concerns during an interview with a private TV channel.
Speaking to host Noor Amanullah on Samaa TV, Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat remarked, “We understand that this is part of government policy, but if unit rates must be increased, it should be done wisely. When usage jumps from 199 to 201 units, the bill rises drastically, creating a heavy burden for consumers. This threshold should be adjusted to 300 or 400 units so that the impact increases gradually. A jump of just one or two units shouldn’t create such a massive financial difference.”
He further stated, “We must always speak the truth and continue to do so. It is our responsibility to raise the public’s voice in legislative forums and before our leadership. This is true politics, and this is what we have done — and, God willing, will continue to do.”
The issue has gained significant attention online, with many users criticizing the steep increase in billing slabs, urging authorities to implement a more balanced and just tariff structure.
