ADB Flags Severe Water Shortage in Balochistan: Only 7% of Land Under Cultivation

QUETTA: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has highlighted an alarming water shortage in Balochistan, revealing in its latest report that only **7% of the province’s land remains under cultivation**, underscoring the urgent need for modern and efficient water management.

According to the ADB report, Balochistan’s newly introduced **digital water and weather monitoring system** is playing a vital role in addressing the crisis. Automated weather stations are providing accurate data on rainfall, temperature, and wind patterns, enabling farmers to plan irrigation schedules more effectively.

The report states that the digital system has significantly reduced water wastage and boosted agricultural productivity. The advanced monitoring network can now predict potential **floods and droughts**, giving authorities reliable information for fair water distribution and improved resource management.

The ADB further noted that local communities, after receiving technical training, are now fully capable of operating and maintaining these systems. Meanwhile, the construction of new dams and canal networks has enhanced water availability for irrigation.

Additionally, the introduction of **solar-powered drip irrigation systems** has improved water conservation and strengthened agricultural sustainability, offering renewed hope for the drought-stricken province.
