Should You Drink Milk Before Bed? New Research Reveals Surprising Reasons to Rethink This Habit

ISLAMABAD – Since childhood, many of us have been told to drink a glass of milk before going to bed—a habit that continues well into adulthood for countless people. But if you are over 30 and still follow this nightly ritual, experts warn it may not be as beneficial as you think.

According to health specialists, most adults above the age of 30 struggle to digest milk due to a natural decline in lactase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose. Although milk remains a valuable source of protein and nutrients vital for bone health, **the timing of consumption plays a crucial role** in how effectively the body absorbs these benefits.

Dr. Palanipan Manickam, a California-based gastroenterologist, explained in a recent Instagram post why drinking milk right before sleep is not advisable. He stated that lactase activity decreases with age, making it difficult for older individuals to digest lactose properly.

He noted that young children naturally produce lactase enzymes in the small intestine, helping them digest milk easily. However, lactase production begins to decline after the age of five, and by the time a person reaches 30, it may drop to almost zero.

Without sufficient lactase, undigested milk travels to the large intestine, where gut bacteria ferment it—leading to bloating, gas, and indigestion. For this reason, Dr. Manickam advises against drinking milk immediately before bedtime.

He further added that even individuals who do not experience digestive discomfort should avoid bedtime milk, as it may contribute to increased abdominal fat. Instead, he recommends consuming milk **2 to 3 hours before sleep**.

Susan Duncan, Vice President of the American Dairy Science Association, emphasized that nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D are essential during early adulthood for strong bones and overall biological functions. If these nutrients are not adequately supplied through diet, the body compensates by drawing them from the bones.

She highlighted that milk provides essential nutrients that support bone health, heart health, and may even reduce the risk of certain cancers. For those who can comfortably digest milk, drinking it a few hours before bedtime is far more beneficial than consuming it right before sleep.

**The bottom line:** Milk is healthy—but timing matters. Drinking it too close to bedtime may do more harm than good, especially for adults with reduced lactose tolerance.
