OpenAI Fixes Long-Standing Em Dash Issue in ChatGPT, Introduces Group Chats Feature

OpenAI has finally resolved a long-standing irritation for many users: the excessive use of long em dashes (—) in ChatGPT’s responses. CEO Sam Altman announced that the chatbot can now follow user instructions to avoid em dashes altogether, calling it a small but delightful victory for users.

For nearly two years, users had complained that ChatGPT continued to insert long dashes even when explicitly asked not to. Altman confirmed on social platform X that when users instruct the model not to use em dashes, it will now comply. When prompted to avoid them, ChatGPT responded: *“Got it! I will avoid using long dashes in all my answers.”*

This preference can now be saved in memory, meaning the model will remember the instruction for future responses as well.

Although the issue may seem minor, editors and AI enthusiasts often joked that the em dash habit was one of ChatGPT’s most persistent quirks. Some users, however, pointed out that the fix isn’t working perfectly across all accounts yet, as the model still occasionally inserts the dash. Others humorously noted that the model continues to make factual mistakes, such as incorrectly referring to Joe Biden as president post-election.

**New Feature: Group Chats**

Alongside this update, OpenAI has also introduced group chats for ChatGPT, functioning similarly to WhatsApp groups.

Users can create groups via a shareable link and add up to 20 participants. ChatGPT joins the conversation as an assistant, helping with brainstorming, discussions, and answering questions.

The feature is currently in pilot testing and available only in select countries, including Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. A wider rollout is expected soon.

**Expansion and New Tools**

This development is part of OpenAI’s ongoing rollout of new experiments and products. Recently, the company launched *Sora*, an AI tool that allows users to create TikTok-style AI-generated videos.

OpenAI also introduced *Atlas*, a browser for macOS users, positioned as an alternative to Google Chrome, Brave, and Comet.
