Persistent Nasal Congestion and Headache? ENT Specialist Offers Relief for Sinusitis

Karachi: In Pakistan, headaches and a blocked nose are often considered minor issues and ignored. However, renowned ENT specialist Dr. Athar Adnan Apple explains that these symptoms may indicate sinusitis, caused by inflammation or infection in the hollow spaces of the nose, eyes, and facial bones.
According to Dr. Apple, sinuses are normally filled with air, and their natural mucous keeps the nose moist while protecting against dust and germs. When this mucous accumulates excessively or its flow is blocked, sinusitis can develop.
**Common Causes:**
* Cold or flu
* Nasal or pollen allergies
* Deviated nasal septum
* Fungal or bacterial infections
* Nasal polyps
* Air pollution and smoking
**Symptoms:**
* Persistent nasal blockage or continuous discharge
* Heaviness or pain in the face or head
* Loss of smell
* Mucus dripping into the throat
* Cough, fever, or toothache
**Treatment:**
Dr. Apple notes that sinusitis treatment generally involves two approaches: medical and surgical.
**Medical Treatment Includes:**
* Steam inhalation
* Nasal irrigation with saline solution
* Increased fluid intake (water, soups, broths)
* Temporary medication for nasal congestion
* Pain relievers or fever reducers like paracetamol
* Complete antibiotic course if infection is present
**Surgical Treatment:**
If symptoms persist after 4–6 weeks of medical treatment, endoscopic surgery may be required. This modern, safe procedure involves no external cuts; treatment is performed inside the nose using a camera to target affected areas.
**Warning Signs:**
Immediate consultation with an ENT specialist is advised if any of the following occur:
* Severe facial or head pain
* Swelling around the eyes
* Persistent fever
* Nausea or vomiting
Dr. Apple urged the public to avoid self-medication or home remedies and seek professional care to prevent complications from sinusitis.
