Next Round of Pakistan-Afghan Taliban Talks to Be Held in Istanbul Today

Islamabad:The next round of **peace talks between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban** will take place **today in Istanbul**, with both sides expected to discuss measures to ensure cross-border peace and prevent attacks on Pakistani soil.
**Defense Minister Khawaja Asif** said that negotiations are only pursued when there is a **real possibility of progress**, adding that “talks without prospects are a waste of time.” He reiterated that **Pakistan’s stance remains firm** — that **Afghanistan’s territory must not be used for attacks against Pakistan.**
Khawaja Asif expressed hope that the **Afghan Taliban would act wisely** in the interest of peace and stability in the region.
Earlier, the **second round of talks** was held in **Istanbul on October 25**, which proved **lengthy and tense**, failing to achieve consensus on Pakistan’s **key demand** — an end to terrorist activities originating from Afghan soil.
During that session, the **Afghan delegation repeatedly sought directions from Kabul and Kandahar**, causing delays and frustration. Following the deadlock, the **Pakistani delegation began returning home** but, at **Turkey’s request**, agreed to stay and give the process **one final chance.**
According to a **statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry**, both sides have since agreed to **maintain the ceasefire**, establish a **monitoring and verification mechanism**, and **penalize violators**, with the **next high-level meeting scheduled for November 6** — now taking place today.
