Major Change Proposed in National ID Cards — Punjab Assembly Approves Resolution to Add Blood Group Information

Lahore:The **National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA)** may soon introduce a major update to Pakistan’s **Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC)** system, making it more useful in emergencies both inside and outside the country.

According to details, the **Punjab Assembly** has **unanimously passed a resolution** proposing that **citizens’ blood group information** be printed on national identity cards. The resolution was moved by **Member of the Provincial Assembly Ahmed Iqbal Chaudhry**, who described the proposal as a public welfare initiative.

The resolution emphasizes that including **blood group details on CNICs** could prove **life-saving** in case of **accidents or medical emergencies**, enabling hospitals and blood banks to provide **timely blood transfusions**.

> “In many cases of road accidents and disasters, the unavailability of a patient’s blood group information causes critical delays,” the resolution stated. “If this information is printed on the national ID card, doctors will be able to act immediately, saving countless lives.”

Currently, NADRA issues CNICs to both **domestic citizens and overseas Pakistanis**, serving as the most vital form of identity for legal, financial, and international recognition.

If approved at the federal level, this amendment will mark **the first major functional upgrade** to the CNIC in years, aligning Pakistan’s national ID system with global best practices in **public health and emergency response**.
