Govt Ends Luxuries for Motorway Police Officers: No More Barbers, Cooks, or Personal Staff

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the Motorway Police and announced the withdrawal of luxury perks provided to senior officers, including barbers, cooks, and personal attendants.
During a high-level meeting, the minister said he was not satisfied with the current performance of the Motorway Police and gave officers and personnel one week to rectify their shortcomings. He directed that government employees working as domestic staff at officers’ residences be sent back to their official duties, stressing that police personnel are meant to serve the public, not individuals.
“Motorway Police officers will no longer be provided with barbers, cooks, or personal servants. Extravagant privileges will not be tolerated. We must reduce unnecessary expenditures,” Aleem Khan said, adding that bureaucracy must move away from traditional practices and focus on practical work.
The minister further stated that better performance would result in improved incentives for the Motorway Police. He instructed strict enforcement of laws on overspeeding and axle load limits, clarifying that speeding fines would apply at 120 km/h, while exceeding 150 km/h would lead to registration of an FIR.
To enhance road safety, the minister ordered public awareness campaigns through pamphlets and signboards, the deployment of more officers at entry points, and outsourcing of vehicle fitness checks. The meeting also discussed introducing electronic vehicle monitoring on motorways in line with international standards.
The briefing was attended by the Federal Secretary for Communications and the Inspector General of Motorway Police.
