Emirates Imposes New Restrictions on Power Banks From October 1

Karachi: Emirates Airline has announced new safety rules for passengers, effective **October 1, 2025**, banning the in-flight use and charging of power banks.

According to the airline’s updated policy, each passenger will be allowed to carry **only one power bank** in their cabin baggage, with a maximum capacity of **100 watt-hours (Wh)**. The device must have its capacity clearly labeled. However, power banks will **not** be permitted in checked luggage under any circumstances.

During the flight, passengers will not be allowed to use power banks to charge devices or recharge the unit itself. The airline has also instructed that power banks may only be stored under the seat or in the seat pocket, but **not in overhead lockers**.

Emirates clarified that this decision was taken due to **safety concerns**, as damaged or overcharged power banks may trigger a *thermal runaway*, potentially causing excessive heat, fire, explosion, or the release of toxic gases.

The airline also reminded travelers of existing rules for other electronic devices: passengers can carry up to **15 personal electronic items** (laptops, mobile phones, tablets, etc.), provided they are packed individually. Any items exceeding the limit or improperly packed may be confiscated.

Battery-powered devices such as **smart bags, hoverboards, and mini-Segways** remain prohibited for both cabin and checked baggage.

Meanwhile, Etihad Airways, responding to a passenger query on social media, confirmed that Bluetooth speakers and up to 15 electronic devices are allowed, but if placed in checked baggage, they must be **completely switched off**. Additional batteries, power banks, and e-cigarettes are strictly **forbidden in checked luggage**, while valuable or fragile devices are safer in carry-on bags.
