U.S. Shifts Focus from India to Pakistan Amid Regional Tensions: The Diplomat

Islamabad: Pakistan’s balanced foreign policy and effective military diplomacy are reshaping its global standing, according to a recent report by international magazine *The Diplomat*. The publication highlights that U.S. strategic priorities are shifting away from India and leaning toward Pakistan, recognizing Islamabad as a key player in South Asia and the Middle East.
The report states that recent Indo-Pak tensions have altered Washington’s assessment of regional military power, with Pakistan emerging as a more reliable partner. India, once seen as the primary U.S. ally in the region, is now struggling to fulfill its role as a “net security provider.”
According to *The Diplomat*, this policy shift has improved alignment on shared interests between Washington and Islamabad, while causing growing unease in New Delhi. The magazine further noted that although India dominated U.S. regional strategy for years, “that era has ended,” with Pakistan stepping into greater prominence.
The report also accused India of covert interference in Balochistan, including orchestrating a campaign of targeted killings. It added that Pakistan consistently showed willingness to improve ties, but India responded with escalation and hostility instead of peace.
Referring to the May 2025 Indo-Pak conflict, the magazine warned that the confrontation raised fears of nuclear escalation before U.S. intervention helped de-escalate tensions. India’s repeated refusal to engage in dialogue, however, has strained its ties with Washington, creating uncertainty and mistrust.
The Diplomat concluded that the U.S.-Pakistan relationship is entering a new phase of strategic importance, while India faces growing challenges in maintaining its traditional influence in the region.
