Flash Floods Hit Buner After Torrential Rains, Mosques Issue Evacuation Calls

Peshawar: Heavy overnight rains triggered flash floods in Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, submerging homes, streets, and markets in Pir Baba and surrounding areas. The sudden surge in water levels turned streams and nullahs into raging torrents, creating scenes of devastation.

Mosques in the affected areas issued repeated announcements urging residents to evacuate immediately. Dozens of families have since moved to safer locations.

On the directives of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, the district administration has been placed on high alert. According to CM spokesperson Faraz Mughal, floodwaters from Batai and Qadar Nagar are rapidly flowing toward Pir Baba Khwar, further intensifying the situation.

Floodwaters have reached the rear of the central market and the very edge of the main road, sparking panic among locals. Deputy Commissioner Kashif Qayyum, District Emergency Officer Kashif Khan, ADC Relief, Rescue 1122, irrigation department staff, and police officials are on the ground overseeing relief efforts.

Authorities confirmed that the situation is being closely monitored and residents are being kept informed. Emergency relief operations have been accelerated in the hardest-hit areas.

The flash floods have rendered key link roads impassable, cutting off transportation in several areas. Standing crops, vegetables, and orchards have been submerged, delivering a severe blow to the local agricultural economy.

Meanwhile, heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning also continued in Malakand’s Batkhela, Allah Dhand Dheri, and surrounding areas. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has maintained a flood alert until September 3 due to the risk of further downpours.
