Punjab Chief Secretary Announces No Compensation for Illegal Constructions in Rivers

Lahore: Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman has announced that the provincial government has decided to remove all illegal constructions along water channels. Speaking on a private TV channel’s program, Zaman discussed the recent floods in the province and ongoing relief efforts. He stated that the government would not provide any compensation for damages caused by illegal constructions within riverbeds and water channels.

In response to the challenges posed by the floods, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz acknowledged that the province was facing significant challenges due to simultaneous heavy rainfall and water releases from India. She emphasized that the exceptional preparedness of rescue teams and the early warning system played a crucial role in minimizing the damage. As a result, thousands of lives were saved by evacuating people from flood-affected areas on time.

Maryam Nawaz further stated that this was the first major flood during her tenure as Chief Minister, and she was committed to taking necessary steps over the next year to prevent similar devastation in the future. She has directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), and her team to develop a comprehensive plan to protect against future floods. This includes the construction of new dams and reservoirs to ensure better flood management.
