NDMA Warns of Major Floods in Indus River; Sindh Government on High Alert

Islamabad:The **National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)** has issued a stark warning of **severe flooding in the lower Indus River**, triggered by heavy inflows from the eastern rivers.
According to NDMA, between **September 3–4**, a flow of **900,000 to 950,000 cusecs** is expected to pass through **Panjnad Headworks**. At **Guddu Barrage**, inflows of **800,000 to 1.1 million cusecs** are forecast between **September 5–6**, while **Sukkur Barrage** could face similar levels from **September 6–7**. At **Kotri Barrage**, flows of **800,000 to 1 million cusecs** are anticipated during **September 8–9**.
The authority further warned that by **September 12–13**, the lower Indus basin could experience **very high flood levels**, threatening **agricultural lands, nearby settlements, villages, and infrastructure**.
In response, **Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah** has directed the administration to remain on **high alert**. During a flood emergency meeting, he ordered the deployment of **over 30,000 Rescue 1122 personnel** in northern districts and the establishment of **500 relief camps** along riverbanks.
The Chief Minister emphasized that **no loss of human life or livestock should occur**, warning that more than **50,000 families** could be affected. He also instructed the private sector to provide **necessary machinery** to support rescue and relief efforts.
Meanwhile, **Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro** stated that water from three rivers is converging into Sindh, but the province has **no option of breaching embankments**. Residents of **Katcha (riverine) areas** have already been placed on high alert.
