Mohammed Shami Breaks Silence on Skipping Fasts During Ramadan, Responds to Criticism

Mumbai: India’s star fast bowler Mohammed Shami has, for the first time, openly addressed the controversy surrounding his decision to skip fasting during Ramadan while playing matches and consuming energy drinks.
In a recent interview, Shami explained: *“We play matches in 42–45 degree heat, putting our lives on the line. Our religion also provides flexibility in such cases. If you are traveling, representing your country, or in a situation where fasting isn’t possible, Islam allows you to skip the fast and make up for it later. I did exactly that.”*
The pacer, who often faces criticism linked to his religious identity despite consistent on-field performances, stressed that people should consider the sacrifices cricketers make for their teams before judging. *“In a tough sport like cricket, players give their physical energy and even risk their lives. Islam has given that concession for a reason,”* he added.
Shami also revealed that he no longer pays attention to online hate: *“All my social media activity is handled by my team. I don’t read the comments myself. Some people write negative things just for attention, so I don’t waste time on it.”*
Currently striving to secure a permanent spot across all three formats, Shami was notably not included in India’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, according to Indian media reports.
