Anti-Terrorism Court Sentences 59 Including Umar Ayub, Shibli Faraz to 10 Years in Rana Sanaullah House Attack Case

Faisalabad, — An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Faisalabad has sentenced 59 individuals, including prominent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Umar Ayub and Shibli Faraz, to 10 years in prison for their alleged involvement in the May 9 attack on the residence of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah.

In a verdict announced in absentia, the ATC handed down 10-year prison terms to several senior PTI figures including Zartaj Gul, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, Rai Murtaza Iqbal, Kanwal Shauzab, Ismail Sila, Ansar Iqbal, Bilal Ejaz, Ashraf Sohna, Mehr Javed, and Shakeel Niazi.

The court also sentenced 16 other accused to 3 years in prison, while 34 individuals — including former federal ministers Fawad Chaudhry and Zain Qureshi — were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

In total, 75 individuals were convicted in the case, which is linked to the widespread violence, arson, and vandalism that broke out across Pakistan following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on May 9, 2023.

This case specifically pertains to an attack on Rana Sanaullah’s residence in Faisalabad and was registered at Samanabad Police Station. It was the fourth and final case related to the May 9 incidents in Faisalabad, where a total of four FIRs had been registered.

The court’s decision marks a significant development in the legal proceedings stemming from the May 9 riots, which had led to widespread arrests and investigations targeting PTI’s top leadership.
