Air India Suspends Flights from Delhi to Washington Starting September 1

Delhi: Air India has announced that it will suspend its flights from New Delhi to Washington, D.C. starting September 1.
According to Reuters, the airline explained that the suspension is due to a shortage of aircraft, which had already been planned for upgrades. Air India’s fleet of Boeing aircraft is aging, and the airline is facing losses following the closure of Pakistani airspace.
The suspension of flights between New Delhi and Washington D.C. marks another setback for the struggling airline, which has been under intense regulatory scrutiny following a fatal crash in Ahmedabad in June, where 260 people lost their lives.
The airline’s fleet has reached the end of its lifespan, primarily due to poor planning in the past, and the closure of Pakistani airspace has further affected Air India’s long-haul operations. Flights have become longer, and operational complexities have increased due to the restriction.
To address these issues, Air India has launched a \$400 million retrofit program to upgrade its fleet. However, the airline has expressed concern that, due to the airspace closure, these costs could rise to \$600 million over the next 12 months.
The closure of airspace between India and Pakistan, a result of the ongoing Kashmir conflict, has added to the airline’s operational challenges. The two countries have fought several wars over the disputed region, and their relations deteriorated further after a limited conflict in Indian-administered Kashmir earlier this year.
As part of the suspension, Air India informed passengers that they can choose alternative flight options to Washington D.C. via its interline partners, including Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Airlines, which operate flights from New York, Newark, Chicago, and San Francisco.
