PCB Imposes Ban on Pakistani Players’ Participation in World Championship of Legends Following Controversial Behavior
Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has expressed strong concerns over the biased and discriminatory conduct in the World Championship of Legends (WCL), announcing a complete ban on Pakistani players’ future participation in the event. The decision was made during a special meeting of the PCB Board of Governors, chaired by Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi.
According to the PCB, the Board has expressed its disappointment and anger that the WCL organizers deliberately awarded points to a team that did not play, violating the spirit of the game and its fundamental principles. The Board specifically criticized the press release issued regarding the cancellation of the Pakistan-India Legends match, deeming it politically motivated and biased, which distorted the true purpose of the championship.
It is noteworthy that India had refused to play the semi-final against Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends. This decision was taken by India amidst rising tensions in bilateral relations and following political turmoil regarding the schedule of the recent Asia Cup.
After India’s refusal to play, cricket fans criticized the former Indian cricketers, with many taking to social media to troll them.
The PCB reiterated its stance of always advocating for keeping politics out of sports, but highlighted that decisions in this event were influenced by unseen political pressures, which the Board considers unacceptable in international sports.
The Board emphasized that the WCL’s apology in itself admitted that the cancellation of matches was not based on any rules or regulations, but was made under the pressure of a nationalist narrative.
PCB maintained that politically-driven and biased decisions tarnish the dignity of international sports, and such an environment not only goes against the dignity of Pakistani players but could also generate future risks.
The Board of Governors’ meeting was attended by key members including Zaheer Abbas, Zahid Akhtar Zaman, Sajjad Ali Khokhar, Zafar Ullah, Tanveer Ahmed, Mohammad Ismail Qureshi, Anwar Ahmed Khan, Tariq Sarwar, PCB COO Sameer Ahmed, PSL CEO Salman Naseer, CFO Javed Murtaza, and Director International Cricket Usman Wahla.
The PCB has made it clear that it will continue to raise its voice in defense of the sanctity and principles of the game.
In the 2025 World Championship of Legends, while former Pakistani players showed outstanding performances, the Indian team won only one match, having refused to play two matches against Pakistan.
It is worth noting that the last Test series between Pakistan and India took place in 2008. Following the Mumbai attacks, India cut off bilateral cricket relations. Pakistan then toured India in 2012 for a One-Day series under the leadership of Shahid Afridi, where India faced a defeat in front of its own public. Since then, the two teams have only met in ICC tournaments.
Recent incidents, such as the Pahalgam incident, have further strained relations between Pakistan and India, affecting their sporting ties. India blamed Pakistan for the Pahalgam incident, worsening the situation.
The politicization of sports in India has led to a significant loss in cricket, damaging its integrity.
