Indian Government Clarifies Its Stance on India-Pakistan Match in Asia Cup

The Indian government has officially responded to the growing controversy surrounding the India-Pakistan match in the upcoming Asia Cup cricket tournament. According to Indian media, the government has stated that the decision regarding India’s participation in the match against Pakistan lies solely with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Sources from the Indian Ministry of Sports have indicated that the Ministry has placed full responsibility for decisions related to the Asia Cup on the Indian cricket board. The Ministry further clarified that the BCCI is not yet under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Sports as the National Sports Governance Bill has not been passed.

The sources also explained that the proposed National Sports Bill includes provisions that would allow the Ministry of Sports to prevent Indian teams or athletes from participating in international events under exceptional circumstances. However, as of now, the bill remains pending approval.

This development follows the announcement of the Asia Cup schedule, where Pakistan, India, UAE, and Oman have been placed in Group A, and Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong are in Group B. The Asia Cup is scheduled to start on September 9 in the UAE, with the highly anticipated Pakistan-India match taking place on September 14.

Since the schedule’s release, Indian media and former players have heavily criticized the BCCI and government, with calls for a boycott of the match against Pakistan echoing from various quarters. Similar to the World Champions League, there have been demands for India to avoid playing against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. Former Indian cricketers have also voiced strong disapproval of the decision to play against Pakistan, fueling further controversy.
