PM Shehbaz Sharif Sends Mangoes Abroad, Sparks Praise and Criticism Over ‘Mango Diplomacy’

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has revived Pakistan’s long-standing tradition of using mangoes as a symbol of goodwill, sending crates of the country’s prized fruit to journalists and associates abroad. The gesture, often referred to as “Mango Diplomacy,” has gone viral on social media, generating both appreciation and criticism.
Several recipients, including international journalists and influencers, took to social media to express gratitude. Safina Khan shared a video thanking the Prime Minister for sending “the world’s best Pakistani mangoes,” saying the sweet gift perfectly represented Pakistan’s rich flavor and cultural pride.

Shama Junejo called it a “beautiful form of Mango Diplomacy,” thanking PM Sharif for a gift that “reminds us of our heritage and relationships.” She added, “May the sweetness of these mangoes bring us harmony, love, and stronger ties.”

Another user, Mishal, wrote, “Mango diplomacy is in action from Lahore to London,” adding that her family loved the fruit, though jokingly noted that Shama Junejo might be missing out this time.

Azhar Javaid shared that the mangoes received in London brought back memories of Pakistan: “The fragrance instantly reminded me of home.”

However, not all reactions were positive. Critics questioned the appropriateness of the gesture, especially in a time of economic challenges. Fayyaz Shah sarcastically remarked, “Is this what the office of the Prime Minister has been reduced to — sending mangoes abroad?”

Another social media user criticized the selective gifting, suggesting that only those critical of the opposition party (PTI) were receiving the fruit. “Seems like PTI critics are lining up quickly — mangoes for all who bash the party,” they wrote.
Others called on the Prime Minister to also send mangoes to local journalists, hinting at potential media favoritism and suggesting that domestic relations required the same sweetness.
While mango diplomacy is not new in Pakistan’s foreign policy toolkit, its use this time has sparked debate over priorities, optics, and the symbolic value of such gestures in a politically polarized climate.
