Weight Loss Injection GLP-1 Linked to Reduced Risk of Dementia: New Study Finds

Islamabad: Scientists have revealed a surprising connection between the weight loss injection GLP-1 and the brain disorder dementia. A recent study has shown that GLP-1 receptor agonists, commonly used for weight loss, may reduce the risk of dementia in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
The study indicates that GLP-1 receptor agonists could lower the likelihood of developing dementia in people with type 2 diabetes. It is worth noting that metformin is usually the first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes, with GLP-1 receptor agonists being prescribed as a second option, or when metformin proves ineffective.
Recently, GLP-1 injections have gained significant popularity as weight-loss medications due to their ability to reduce hunger and promote a feeling of fullness. Past research has suggested that people with type 2 diabetes are at a significantly higher risk of developing dementia. Studies have shown that the risk of dementia in diabetic patients can be up to 70% higher compared to healthy individuals.
Earlier research has found that both GLP-1 injections and metformin helped reduce the risks of dementia. However, a recent large-scale study found that GLP-1 injections are more effective in lowering dementia risk compared to metformin when used for weight loss.
This new insight could have important implications for managing both diabetes and the risk of dementia in patients.
