Nationwide Traders’ Strike: Complete and Partial Shutdown Observed Across Pakistan Except Islamabad

Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore – July 19, 2025: A nationwide strike called by traders against the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) increased powers has led to a complete and partial shutter-down in various cities, with Islamabad being the only major city where business continues as usual.
According to Express News, the trader community is divided over the strike call, resulting in a full working day in Islamabad where all major markets and commercial centers remain open.
In contrast, most markets in Karachi, Lahore, Hyderabad, and several other cities remain completely or partially shut.
President of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Javed Bilwani, reaffirmed their commitment to the strike, stating that the government failed to provide written assurances regarding their demands. “If no written action is taken before the next meeting, we will escalate the protest,” Bilwani warned. He added that major commercial hubs including Jodia Bazaar, electronics and mobile markets, fruit and vegetable markets are shut. The All Pakistan Restaurants Association and local transport unions have also expressed support for the strike.
In Lahore, the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and various trader groups have backed the strike. As a result, all major markets — including Shah Alam Market, Akbari Mandi, Rang Mahal, Anarkali, Mall Road, Hall Road, and others — are either fully or partially closed. Other affected areas include Samanabad, Ichhra, Abid Market, Gulberg, Defence, Mughalpura, Daroghawala, and Misri Shah.
Trader leader Haji Maqsood Butt said, “Today’s strike is a success. The trader community has proven its unity. We will not accept any forced regulations or unlawful powers given to the FBR.”
Similarly, in Hyderabad, a partial to complete shutdown is observed in markets like Anaj Mandi, Gul Center, Resham Bazaar, and Cantt Bazaar. Some areas such as Tower Market and Shahbaz Bazaar remain partially open.
Reports from Peshawar, Quetta, and several other small and major cities indicate similar shutdowns as part of the protest.
The strike is seen as a strong message from Pakistan’s trader community, demanding withdrawal of what they call “unjustified and harassing” powers granted to the FBR.
