Trump Administration Fires 1,400 State Department Employees Following Court Approval

In a major shake-up, the Trump administration has terminated nearly 1,400 employees from the U.S. State Department following a green light from the courts. This includes 1,107 civil service workers and 246 foreign service officers based in the United States. The employees were informed via letters that, under the directive of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, they were being dismissed as part of a “reorganization plan.”
As part of President Trump’s “America First” agenda, several offices dealing with human rights, democracy, and refugees are being shut down. These responsibilities are being reassigned to regional bureaus. The layoffs are being carried out with a focus on streamlining domestic operations while prioritizing diplomatic interests. The plan emphasizes closing non-essential offices and eliminating positions deemed redundant.
Upon receiving the news, dozens of State Department employees gathered in the building’s lobby, giving a standing ovation to those being laid off in recognition of their service. Some of the dismissed employees were visibly emotional, carrying boxes filled with their belongings while hugging colleagues and shedding tears.
Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen expressed solidarity with the fired employees, joining them outside the building, where State Department workers held signs reading “Thank You” in appreciation of the outgoing diplomats.
A five-page checklist sent to employees also stated that they would no longer be allowed to enter the building after 5 PM and that their official email accounts would be deactivated. Media reports suggest that among those fired were employees involved in overseeing the resettlement of Afghan refugees to the U.S.
With the total number of State Department employees in the U.S. estimated at around 18,000, preparations are underway to dismiss about 3,000 staff members.
Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat, condemned the move, describing it as a blow to U.S. security. “This is one of the most ridiculous decisions, especially at a time when China is expanding its diplomatic footprint globally, Russia continues its invasion of sovereign Ukraine, and the Middle East faces one crisis after another,” he stated.
In February, President Trump had ordered Secretary of State Marco Rubio to overhaul the department and remove employees he deemed disloyal. The president has repeatedly expressed his desire to “drain the swamp” by dismantling what he refers to as the “deep state.”
Trump’s administration believes that reducing the size of the bureaucracy will save taxpayer money, with the President often arguing that many government positions are a waste of public funds. It is worth noting that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has already been subjected to similar cuts under Trump’s orders.
