Tensions Rise Over Suspension of 26 Punjab Assembly Members: Speaker and Opposition Seek Face-Saving Solution

Lahore: A high-stakes meeting between the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly and opposition lawmakers over the suspension of 26 members ended with both sides leaning toward a face-saving resolution, though tensions remain high.
According to sources, the proceedings initially began under Article 10-A of the Constitution, with opposition members appearing collectively under the leadership of the Opposition Leader instead of attending individually. The opposition appealed for a democratic approach to resolve the issue.
During the discussion, a PML-N minister expressed anger over derogatory remarks allegedly made against party leadership, calling them “intolerable.” In response, opposition members acknowledged that tensions had escalated from both sides.
Insiders reveal that Speaker Punjab Assembly emphasized the meeting was aimed at giving lawmakers an opportunity and upholding democratic values, while also stressing the importance of following parliamentary rules. Both the Speaker and opposition representatives reportedly agreed to offer each other a “face-saving” exit from the standoff.
After the session, the opposition members refrained from speaking to the media and instead said they would address the press after the next hearing.
Opposition lawmakers also voiced concerns to the Speaker, accusing him of acting against them while ignoring misconduct by treasury members. The Speaker reportedly clarified that he had not officially submitted any reference and had only issued warnings to the opposition.
Meanwhile, the government has taken a firm stance on the constitutional matter. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman insisted that decisions must be made according to the law and constitution, stating, “No apology should be granted.”
When asked whether the government was in favor of holding by-elections in the seats of suspended opposition members, Rehman replied, “Yes, that is correct.”
