Flight Operations Disrupted Across the Gulf as Iran Targets U.S. Airbase in Doha

Doha, QatarThe missile attack launched by Iran on the U.S. airbase in Doha has caused widespread disruptions to flight operations across the entire Gulf region. After several hours of airspace closures, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain have reopened their airspace, but air travel remains heavily impacted.
Despite no official announcements from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia regarding airspace closures, the region’s flight operations were severely affected. Several airports, including those in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Riyadh, Jeddah, Medina, Bahrain, Kuwait, Muscat, and others, saw hundreds of flights either diverted or grounded due to the airspace restrictions.
**Key Disruptions:**
* **Doha Airport**: The complete closure of Doha’s Hamad International Airport forced more than **200 flights** to be rerouted to alternative airports, while others had their departures delayed or canceled. The airspace shutdown affected flight schedules for both inbound and outbound flights, with many redirected to European airports or returning to their points of origin.
* **Bahrain and Kuwait**: Flight operations at Bahrain International Airport were heavily impacted, with the arrival and departure of **150 flights** halted. Similarly, **100 flights** at Kuwait City’s airport were either delayed or canceled.
* **Regional Flight Cancellations**: Due to the closure of airspace, flights from cities such as Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Sharjah, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Dammam, Medina, and Muscat were diverted or canceled. Among them, **14 flights** had to be rerouted to alternative airports, with **3 flights landing at Muscat**. Additionally, around **30 flights** were delayed for several hours across Pakistan’s seven major airports.
* **International Airlines Affected**:
* Major international airlines, including **Air Canada, Air France, British Airways, United Airlines, Singapore Airlines**, and others, suspended flights to the Gulf region.
* **Turkish Airlines** canceled its flights to Bahrain, Dammam, Doha, Dubai, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, and Muscat for the day.
* Egypt also suspended its flight operations to the Gulf, further contributing to the chaos in air travel.
* **Passenger Distress**: Thousands of passengers waiting at Doha Airport were left stranded, facing long delays and uncertainty as a result of the sudden airspace restrictions.
**PIA’s Response**:
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced a temporary halt to its flight operations in the region, citing the ongoing security situation and airspace closures. Passengers were advised to monitor updates from the airline regarding further travel advisories.
This disruption highlights the volatility of the situation in the Gulf, with ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran exacerbating travel difficulties for thousands of passengers. The uncertain security environment has led to a marked decline in air travel to and from the region, as many travelers opt to delay or cancel their trips.
