Cold or Allergy? How to Differentiate Between the Two

Islamabad:Sneezing, a runny nose, and a scratchy throat are common symptoms found in both colds and allergies, making it challenging to distinguish between the two. Due to the similarity in symptoms, many people often find themselves confused about whether they are suffering from a seasonal cold or an allergy.
Health experts highlight the key differences, explaining that a cold is a viral infection that develops gradually. Symptoms of a cold include a sore throat, mild fever, body aches, fatigue, and thick or colored mucus. A cold typically lasts between 7 to 10 days and is contagious, meaning it can spread easily from one person to another.
On the other hand, allergies are not caused by a virus, but by environmental factors such as pollution, dust, or pet dander triggering an immune response in the body. Allergy symptoms come on quickly and typically include a persistent runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, but do not involve fever or body aches. Allergies can persist for weeks or even months, especially when allergens remain in the environment.
In terms of treatment, the approach for each condition is different. A cold generally requires rest, warm fluids, time, and patience, while allergies are typically managed with antihistamines or nasal sprays like corticosteroids.
If your symptoms appear suddenly, include itchy eyes or nose, and there is no fever or body aches, it’s likely an allergy. However, if you have a fever, sore throat, and fatigue, it may be a cold.
Experts advise that if symptoms are unclear or persist for an extended period, it is best to consult a certified doctor rather than self-diagnose. Avoid unnecessary medications to prevent symptoms from lingering longer than necessary.
