PM Approves ‘My Meter, My Reading’ App to Phase Out Meter Readers Nationwide

Islamabad:Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the decision to phase out the role of meter readers employed by electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) across the country. To replace this system, a new digital app called “My Meter, My Reading” will soon be launched, allowing consumers to upload their own electricity meter readings. This initiative will be implemented nationwide, excluding the jurisdiction of K-Electric.
According to Business Recorder, under the current system, meter readers take pictures of consumers’ electricity meters and send them to DISCOs, which then generate bills based on these readings. However, this system has led to widespread complaints about overbilling and inaccuracies. Many consumers have expressed dissatisfaction with their high electricity bills and questioned the accuracy of their meter readings.
The issue was discussed during an important meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on June 17, 2025. The meeting focused on eliminating the role of meter readers and automating the billing process.
Sources revealed that the Prime Minister directed the Power Division to expedite the launch of the “Power Smart Mobile App,” which will be available in Urdu and four regional languages: Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi. This multilingual feature will ensure that the general public can easily access and use the app. The Power Division has been instructed to conduct a soft launch of the app immediately, allowing for the resolution of any initial technical issues before its full-scale national rollout.
The Prime Minister has given the Power Division one month to prepare a detailed plan for the phased elimination of meter readers. To ensure the success of this initiative, a comprehensive media campaign is being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The campaign will educate consumers on the benefits of self-meter readings, with the government allocating PKR 316 million for the nationwide awareness effort.
The Power Information Technology Company (PITC) has instructed all DISCOs to develop their own awareness campaigns at the local level. Additionally, a detailed “Terms of Reference (ToR)” has been created, outlining the scope, objectives, methods, and responsibilities of PITC and MEPCO, which include media planning, vendor coordination, field activation, monitoring, and reporting.
DISCOs have requested guidance from PITC’s CEO on how the costs of the media campaign will be covered, whether through deductions from consumer bills or via PITC’s promotional materials (banners, stands, boards). There has also been a suggestion to secure free air-time for public service announcements on electronic media.
The DISCOs have emphasized the need for PITC to thoroughly test and validate the apps—such as “Power Smart App,” “My Meter, My Reading,” “CCMS+,” and “Line Man Mobile Solution”—before their official launch to avoid any technical issues and to ensure a better and more reliable consumer experience.
Sources suggest that during the campaign, PITC will ensure high performance, trust, and transparency across all platforms, meeting all government requirements with complete accountability.
This initiative is seen as a significant step towards addressing issues of overbilling, corruption, and inaccuracies in meter readings, providing consumers with a more reliable and transparent system.
