Experts Warn Against Overindulgence in Meat During Eid al-Adha to Avoid Health Risks

Islamabad: As Eid al-Adha celebrations bring joy and feasts featuring delicious meat dishes, medical experts are urging the public to practice moderation and caution in their eating habits to avoid health complications.
Experts have warned that excessive consumption of meat, spicy foods, and improper storage methods can lead to gastrointestinal diseases, diarrhea, and cholera. These conditions often result in increased pressure on hospitals, especially during the festive season.
Doctors advise that meat should be stored in airtight jars or polyethylene bags instead of plastic bags to prevent contamination. They stress the importance of moderation in eating to maintain health while enjoying the festivities.
Dr. Imran Sarwar, the Emergency In-charge at Civil Hospital Karachi, highlighted that there is a noticeable spike in patients suffering from stomach-related illnesses on the first day of Eid. He attributes this increase primarily to overindulgence in food and excessive consumption of spicy dishes.
Health experts also recommend that meat should be consumed in a safe and controlled manner. A healthy adult can eat 100 to 150 grams of meat daily, while children can consume around 70 grams. For individuals with chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, it is advised to limit meat intake even further.
Dr. Sarwar further emphasized that while goat meat is considered lighter and healthier compared to beef, it should still be prepared with mild spices and served with yogurt, salads, fruits, and vegetables to prevent digestive issues.
By following these precautions, citizens can ensure they enjoy the celebrations without compromising their health.
