Over 100 Inmates Escape from Karachi’s Malir Jail, 46 Recaptured — Sindh Home Minister Launches Investigation

Karachi:In a major security breach, more than 100 inmates escaped from Malir Jail in Karachi, prompting an immediate response from Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar, who visited the facility to assess the situation firsthand.
Speaking to Geo News, Minister Lanjar clarified, **“Contrary to initial reports, the jail wall was not broken — the inmates exited through the main gate.”** He emphasized that a full investigation is underway, and conclusive comments will only be made once a detailed report is received.

According to preliminary figures, approximately **100 prisoners** managed to flee, **46 of whom have already been recaptured**. A coordinated manhunt involving police and Rangers is ongoing to apprehend the remaining escapees. Lanjar noted that **the fugitives were not involved in serious crimes**, although security concerns remain high.
At the time of the escape, **Malir Jail housed nearly 6,000 inmates**, significantly exceeding its intended capacity. The minister acknowledged that **administrative negligence cannot be ruled out**, and further inquiry is required to determine the root cause.

Meanwhile, **intensive search operations** are being carried out in and around the jail. Multiple checkpoints have been set up across the city, and law enforcement teams are conducting raids in several areas to locate the escaped prisoners.
This incident raises critical questions about prison security and administrative oversight in one of Karachi’s largest correctional facilities.
