Pakistani Women Call for Tax Relief on Clothing, Makeup, and Bags in Upcoming Federal Budget 2025-26

Islamabad:As the federal government prepares to unveil the **2025-26 budget** in early June, women across Pakistan are voicing strong expectations for **targeted tax relief** on essential consumer items that significantly impact their daily lives.
From **clothing** to **makeup products** and **leather bags**, women are urging the government to consider their financial challenges amid rising inflation and the increasing cost of living.
### **”Clothing Has Become a Luxury,” Says Private School Teacher**
Sara Ahmed, a school teacher from Rawalpindi, highlighted that **high taxes on clothing** have made even basic apparel unaffordable for middle-class women.
> “A suit that used to cost Rs. 7,000 to 8,000 now sells for Rs. 20,000 to 25,000. It’s become nearly impossible for an average working woman to buy decent clothes,” she said.
Sara urged the government to **reduce taxes on garments**, stating that such a move would enable women to meet their essential needs more affordably.
### **Beauticians Demand Lower Taxes on Makeup**
Ayesha Mahmood, a 28-year-old beautician, emphasized that **makeup is no longer just a luxury**—it’s now a necessity for many professional women.
> “Makeup boosts confidence and plays a role in professional appearance, especially in service-oriented fields,” she explained.
> She added that **imported branded makeup items are heavily taxed**, making them unaffordable for many women, particularly those running small beauty salons or working as freelancers.
### **Leather Bags: A Stylish Yet Costly Essential**
Fatima Zahra, a software engineer, called for **lower taxes on leather handbags**, citing both fashion and functionality.
> “A quality leather bag completes a woman’s look, whether at work or a formal gathering,” she said.
> She added that **high import duties and sales taxes** have made such bags out of reach for many consumers and believes that **cutting taxes could support the local leather industry** while benefiting female consumers.

As economic pressures mount, these voices reflect a broader sentiment among Pakistani women who seek **more inclusive and gender-sensitive fiscal policies**. The upcoming federal budget will be closely watched to see whether the government addresses these concerns with **practical relief measures**.
