Occupied Kashmir Rivers Power 27% of Pakistan’s Electricity, Officials Warn of Potential Threat from Indian Water Policies
Islamabad:Pakistani authorities have revealed that **27% of the country’s electricity** is generated through **hydropower projects built on rivers originating from Indian-occupied Kashmir**. These rivers, including the **Indus and Jhelum**, are vital to Pakistan’s energy infrastructure.
According to officials, Pakistan has established **hydropower capacity exceeding 9,000 megawatts** on these rivers, contributing significantly to the **120 billion units of electricity** generated annually. Major projects dependent on these water sources include:
* **Tarbela Dam**
* **Mangla Dam**
* **Neelum–Jhelum Hydropower Plant**
* **Karot Project**
* **Ghazi-Barotha Hydropower Project**
Authorities have expressed concern that if **India continues water aggression or manipulates river flows**, it could **partially disrupt electricity production** from these critical sources.
Experts emphasize the need for **robust diplomatic engagement** and **reinforcement of the Indus Waters Treaty** to safeguard Pakistan’s **water and energy security** amid ongoing tensions with India.
