Livestock Prices Drop Sharply in Karachi as Animal Supply Surges Ahead of Eid

Karachi:The prices of sacrificial animals in Karachi’s cattle markets have seen a notable decline following the arrival of a large number of animals ahead of Eid-ul-Adha. This marks a significant shift from earlier weeks when fears of nationwide livestock shortages had driven prices to soaring levels.

Just three weeks ago, the price of a two-year-old calf was reported at Rs. 65,000 to Rs. 70,000 per *mann* (40 kg). However, with improved supply, prices have dropped to around Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 60,000 per *mann*.

Initially, traders had projected a severe shortage post-Ramadan, creating a perception that livestock would be scarce nationwide. This contributed to an artificial hike in prices in Karachi’s major markets, such as Bhains Colony and Malir Mandi, which remained unusually quiet in previous weeks.

Now, the situation has changed dramatically, especially at Karachi’s largest cattle market located at the Northern Bypass, where over 150,000 animals have arrived. Reports indicate that nearly 50,000 of these animals have already been sold.

Sources suggest one major reason for the price drop is the outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), prompting sellers to dispose of animals quickly to avoid losses. Additionally, the ongoing intense heat has compelled traders from remote regions to expedite sales and return home, further contributing to the downward trend in prices.

At present, the price of large animals has dropped from Rs. 65,000–70,000 per *mann* to Rs. 55,000–60,000, drawing increased interest from buyers.

Experts caution, however, that prices could rise again in the final days leading up to Eid if the supply of animals tightens. While further reductions seem unlikely, the possibility of a sudden spike remains.
